I’m feeling really horribly anti-social today, so it’s nice to see hourly comics of everyone else being anti-social, too. Thanks, guys. We in this together.

junehovicks asked: Even though TWD is my favorite show, I completely agree about the sexism in the show. It's especially bad in season 1, but in season 2, you have characters like Andrea and Maggie saying fuck gender roles, and by season 3 all the women have given up on gender roles and all know how to defend themselves. The sexism is still THERE but not the way it was in season 1, and most of the men respect the women and don't feel like they need to protect them just because they're women.

Thanks for answering! It’s great to know that there are strong characters later on that don’t rely on traditional gender roles. I don’t know if I want to “put up” with the rampant sexism for the sake of an otherwise rad show or not… but I guess there’s a lot of putting-up-with to be done when we consume any media.

Also, I suppose maybe the sexism and racism are so strong early on to emphasize how everyone is trying to cling on to their old ways and traditions. That could change over time as they adapt to whatever happens in the future. I mean, I get the feeling that the sexism is kind of ingrained in the show, but maybe I’m wrong. “A-ah—!! Corral-sama…” the young honey ant queen stammered, as the dominant queen’s mandibles brushed across her labium. Had she the physiology, the new queen would have blushed scarlet; but as it was, she was limited to showing her discomfort through a frantic twitching of her antennae. “What are you—”
“Be silent,” commanded Corral, her feelers searching mockingly across the carapace of her prey. “You’ve made a grave mistake coming here, you know. But no ant can resist me.” The young queen was frightened, she knew, but she wouldn’t flee. The domineering ruler leaned in close and let her pinchers dance across the other’s clypeus, prolonging her suffering.
“Corral-sama…” chittered the young queen, barely containing her eagerness. “P-please…”
Corral chuckled to herself. This one would make a fine addition to her harem. Smooth thorax, fine plump abdomen- she took a moment to appreciate them with her antennae- and best of all, weak and compliant. She would birth many fine ants, and then, when the time came, she would be killed by her own children, and Corral would once again be the sole queen of her colony.
“Patience is a virtue,” Corral hissed to the new queen. “But I will humour you.” She tilted her head down, slowly, and the mandibles of the two queen ants met. The young queen quivered in ecstasy as pheromones flowed into her body, not realizing that she was being brainwashed with commands that would make her subservient to Corral for life.
Sometimes, mused the high queen, tyranny is just too easy.
